While no recall has been issued, the FDA is urging dog owners to choose another brand of food to feed their pets.

Attention, dog owners! Double check which brand of dog food you are feeding your canine because 16 brands of dog food may be linked to a spike in cases causing cardiomyopathy or DCM which can lead to congestive heart failure. 

When the FDA originally released the warning, they did not specify any brands of food but said to look out for foods containing the primary grain-free ingredients like peas, lentils, legume seeds, and/or potatoes. After extensive research, they later discovered that the spike in reports of cases was due to the recipe formulation, processing, and the individual animal, in addition to those specific ingredients.

Please consult with a professional, like your vet, who knows your breed of dog and what they recommended you feed them. 

"We know it can be devastating to suddenly learn that your previously healthy pet has a potentially life-threatening disease like DCM. That's why the FDA is committed to continuing our collaborative scientific investigation into the possible link between DCM and certain pet foods," said Dr. Steven M. Solomon, director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Just between January 2014 and April 30 2019, the FDA has received 524 reports of heart disease, 119 deaths, and five cat fatalities. In fact, 222 of those reports came in between December 1, 2018, and April, 2019.

The top three brands with the most cases are Acana with 67, Zignature with 64, and Taste of the Wild with 53. 

The FDA is not releasing a recall of the dog food brands but rather issuing a warning that they have been linked to the spike in heart disease cases. 

For the sake of your sanity and the health of your pup, do not feed them any more of the food, and make sure to dispose of it properly.
