When the holiday light shows and markets come to an end, how will you survive the bleak month of January in Colorado? There's a noticeable lack of events and activities to get involved in this time of year, but four Colorado winter festivals offer hope for action-packed weekends. So don your snow boots and your hats and mittens and take a weekend getaway in January!
Breckenridge Ullr Fest
January 9-12, 2019
This winter festival returns for its 55th year and brings 12,000 snow lovers to town for a number of festive events. The festival boasts the biggest bonfire in town (where you can burn your Christmas tree!), and also features a parade down Main Street. You can also take part in the Ullr ice plunge and enjoy drinks and entertainment after a long day of skiing. The festival ends with an ice skating party, bike race, and adventure film festival.

Winterskol in Aspen
January 10-13, 2019
At this Aspen winter festival, you can participate in a snow sculpting competition, with a special sculpting event for kids offered as well. Eat around a bonfire, attend a winter wonderland party, see winter-themed films, ice skate, watch the fireworks, and more. There's even a comedy pet circus happening on Friday, with very smart (and very cute) dogs and cats.
Estes Park Winter Festival
January 19-20, 2019
This festival boasts an indoor ice skating rink, live music, free beer tastings from local brewers, free food from local food trucks, and plenty of kid-friendly activities. Make a weekend of it and spend a day skiing or snowshoeing in Rocky Mountain National Park.
UllrGrass in Golden
January 25-27, 2019
Come wearing your Viking horns and stay for the bluegrass musicians. This festival has an impressive lineup and will feature a band contest, Troubador contest, and costume contest. It's also a beer festival -- your ticket gets you unlimited tastings from more than 27 breweries.
