Hot off the presses: Colorado Springs is the place to see this year!

We all know that Colorado Springs is a pretty awesome place to visit, but The New York Times is making sure everyone else knows it, as well! The Springs recently ranked as No. 13 on NYT Travel Desk's "52 Places to Go in 2020 List."

The list, compiled in conjunction with travel correspondents and professionals, included only seven U.S. cities, with Washington D.C. topping the list.

"How did we choose them?" writes The NYT. "... We asked our regular contributors, as well as The Times’s foreign and domestic correspondents, to suggest places that seemed newly fresh and compelling. We pestered in-the-know travelers for their 2020 musts. We grilled travel pros about what had them excited. To make the cut, it is not enough for a place to be beautiful, amazing and culturally significant. It also has to answer the question, why now? Why this place, this year?"

Colorado Springs, finishing just behind Lesotho, Africa, and just ahead of Krakow, Poland, was chosen thanks to several new projects that were designated as being visit-worthy this year, including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum and the Pikes Peak Summit House Complex.

The locavore food scene in the Springs also was a draw, suggesting dining experiences like the local trout at the Broadmoor, Nightingale Bread's products made from organic heirloom grain, and Four by Brother Luck, whose dishes are inspired by the indigenous foods of the Four Corners region.

"A gateway to alpine vacationlands since trains first arrived in 1871, Colorado Springs springs anew in 2020," says the NYT piece.

The top 15 places to visit this year, according to the NYT Travel Desk are ranked below:

  1. Washington, D.C.
