A detour is in place to handle through traffic.

Get your traffic apps ready, or maybe reconsider travel plans if you are hoping to go from Denver to the Springs on I-25 in a hurry. From 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, to 11 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 12, I-25 will close completely, both directions, for construction. The closure is at Sky View Lane Bridge, known locally as Tomah Road.

During the closure, CDOT crews will be busy installing drainage improvements in that section of the road. After tearing up asphalt, two drainage pipes will be placed under the northbound I-25 lanes, and one drainage pipe will be placed under the southbound lanes. The repairs are being made in an effort to improve safety and conditions on a section of the road that has some pretty significant issues. If you've driven it, you know what a minefield it can be to navigate with all the construction that has taken place, particularly during the dark and during inclement weather.

If you are heading south during the closure time, you aren't totally out of luck. You will have a detour option in the form of exit ramps at the Sky View Lane Bridge, but it could add at least 45 minutes to your travel time (and possibly more).

"All lanes of I-25 will be closed during scheduled construction work Saturday, Jan. 11 7 p.m. through Sunday, Jan. 12 11 a.m. Traffic will detour using the off- and on-ramps. Only one lane will be open in each direction along the detour route. Heavy traffic and delays are likely especially Saturday evening and mid-late morning Sunday. Plan accordingly," CDOT relates

This closure is part of CDOT's 'Gap' project to widen I-25 from two to three lanes from Castle Rock to Monument. The lane added each way will be a toll lane, which has been received with mixed feelings. The current commute is less than enjoyable for drivers going both ways between the Springs and Denver, with long delays, accidents, lane closures, and much more becoming the norm for that stretch.

Construction is about a year and a half into the project, which is slated to finish in 2022. You can stay up to date with other closures and road conditions by accessing the following:
