The Denver Animal Shelter reported taking in 87 dogs during the Fourth of July weekend. Between the loud booms and the lights of the fireworks, many pets get scared and anxious, so it's always important to keep your pets safe and calm—especially during this time of the year.

According to the Denver Animal Shelter, on July 5, they had more than double the number of dog intakes compared to the week prior. To compare, in June, the average of dogs taken in was 18—the Fourth of July weekend saw a 78% increase in intakes.

Each day had a different number of dogs taken in:

  • July 3: 13 dogs
  • July 4: 13 dogs
  • July 5: 32 dogs
  • July 6: 17 dogs
  • July 7: 12 dogs

The shelter will do its best to reunite the dogs with their owners as long as they can be identified. Lost pets taken in without identification will be held for five days before they're put up for adoption.

If you lost your pet, you should check the Denver Animal Shelter website and immediately go to the shelter or call (720)-913-1311 if you see your dog online.
