Here are 7 tips to survive working from home during quarantines.
To many, the occasional "work from home" day is a delightful convenience. No commuting, no changing out of pajamas, and cleaning while on conference calls is great a few times a month. However, when working from home is forced upon you and you're faced with adopting a temporary new normal, it can be a bit of a struggle. For those working professionals who are now turning their kitchen table into their home office, here are some tips to get you through the day:
1. Keep Dressing for Success.
If your office stressed a business casual dress code, keep it up. Just the act of changing out of your night clothes and into your work clothes will make you feel prepared to take on the day.
2. If Possible, Have Your Back to a Wall.
If you are spending most of your workday on video conference calls, you don't want to run the risk showing of a pantsless spouse or a wayward child in the background. Play it safe and watch where you point the camera.
3. Take Breaks.
Just like taking breaks throughout the day at the office, give yourself time to go retrieve the mail, check on a neighbor, or run a quick errand.
4. Plan Digital Happy Hours.
For those who miss their coworkers, schedule an after-work happy hour over Zoom or similar platform. Pour your drink of choice and get to catching up!
5. Stay Active.
Exercise during your lunch hour and get a healthy dose of endorphins. Whether it's a jog around the neighborhood or an in-home workout over YouTube, staying active will do wonders for your physical and mental health.
6. Keep a To-Do List.
Write down everything you need to get done each day and check them off upon completion. The satisfaction of staying on task and keeping yourself accountable for your work will motivate you to soldier on.
7. Remind Yourself That This Is Temporary!
You will see your coworkers again. You will go out to lunch again. You will have office parties again. You will complain about the printer jamming again. You may not be going back to work today, but you will soon. And, come December, you'll laugh about it during the office Christmas party. Until then, take care of yourself.
