SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — State lawmakers are trying to plan for devastating changes for Illinoisans on Medicaid . More than 3 million Illinoisans rely on Medicaid for healthcare, but President Donald Trump plans to slash federal matching funds. Democratic lawmakers know the expected cuts could force Illinois to generate an extra $3 billion for keep people covered. Decatur resident Diane Inman told reporters in Springfield Wednesday that she turned to Medicaid after she was diagnosed with stage four cancer in 2018. "If I hadn't have done that, I would have probably had to sell my home, my car, and been out of any money within a year with the cost of cancer care," Inman said. Legislative leaders said Medicaid funding supports hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and pharmacies. All three Republican members of Congress from Illinois represent more than 20,000 Medicaid recipients. Illinois Democrats argue those Republicans have the power to stand up to the Trump administration and vote against any cuts to Medicaid funding. "I think that they're stuck between a rock and a hard place with this president," said Rep. Anna Moeller (D-Elgin). "He bullies, and pressures, and threatens members of Congress to vote on his proposals while they know that they will face the voters and people who are upset when they come home." Republicans on the House Appropriations Health & Human Services Committee said Democrats are using this moment to grandstand against the Trump administration instead of passing legislation to help Illinois families.
