LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. (7News) — Authorities in Loudoun County, Virginia have identified 24-year-old Joshua Riibe as a person of interest in connection to missing college student Sudiksha Konanki’s disappearance last week in the Dominican Republic, according to officials. The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office confirmed to 7News Wednesday morning that they have a "person of interest" in the missing case, however, they note "This is not at this time a criminal case, which would be different." This comes after new security video was posted on Noticias SIN, a news outlet in the Dominican Republic. The video shows Konanki and a group of friends walking to the beach in the early morning hours of March 6 at the hotel in Punta Cana. The video then shows four friends returning to the hotel about an hour later. But the 20-year-old student and another man were not seen with them on security cameras. According to ABC News, the man told police they were swimming and got caught in a wave, and then he fell asleep on the beach. Riibe has not been accused of any crimes and authorities in the Dominican Republic have said he is not considered a suspect. The LCSO said that this remains a missing person investigation and not a criminal investigation. Konanki went missing on March 6 after traveling to the Dominican Republic for spring break with several other friends from the University of Pittsburgh, where a family friend said she was studying medicine. Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman said Monday that when she disappeared, she was with one of the friends she traveled with as well as several other people who were not part of her group. “They were not people that traveled with her. They were not people from the University of Pittsburgh. They were people that they met down there, and that’s all I can tell you at this point,” Chapman told 7News. Sheriff Chapman said he has been in contact with U.S. federal authorities who are on the ground in the Dominican Republic. Those who are there include the FBI, which is assisting Dominican authorities. Right now, authorities said the investigation is being treated as an accident, and it's believed she drowned.
