The Maryland Book Bank is finding new ways to get books in the hands of children during the pandemic. Normally the nonprofit distributes books via its bookmobile, visiting schools in Baltimore City. When the pandemic closed schools, however, the program had to be put on hold. Now the book bank has started a new program where books will be mailed to children enrolled in Title One schools in Baltimore City. Kids will get a selection of books based on their age, grade level, and interests.

You can find out if your child’s school qualifies by calling or visiting the school’s website. To get the books, visit the Maryland Book Bank website and fill out the form with your child’s information, and get ready to start reading! The book bank has sent out 47,050 books to more than 11,000 children since the pandemic put the brakes on the bookmobile.

Not in a Title One school? Your kids can still get books. The Maryland Book Bank has another program where parents can pick up book packs at the warehouse. Book packs are distributed twice a week, based on availability. You must register for a pickup on the book bank website. If no slots are available, keep checking back. Each child is eligible for one book pack per month. 

The Maryland Book Bank is always in need of financial contributions and donations of books. If you have children or adult books you would like to donate, you can drop them off 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the south covered loading dock at 1794 Union Ave. in Baltimore. All books must be in good shape and must be packed in bags or boxes.
