With Cinco de Mayo upon us, the Maryland State Police is ramping up traffic enforcement efforts. From increased DUI patrols to saturation initiatives, the police are reminding everyone to drive responsibly during the celebratory weekend. A significant push for this enforcement comes as Maryland reports sobering statistics: on average, 158 lives are claimed yearly by impaired driving, resulting in over 2,700 injuries, according to the Maryland State Police website .

To reduce the risks associated with driving under the influence, troopers stationed at each of the 23 barracks in Maryland, as well as the State Police Impaired Driving Reduction Effort Team (SPIDRE), will undertake statewide DUI saturation patrols. They will employ high-visibility enforcement strategies to quickly respond to incidents and address violations that pose a threat to motorist safety. It's a statewide initiative, from the Eastern Region's US Routes 13 and 50, down to Centreville, Easton, and other areas, each barracks is determined to lower the chances of accidents and fatalities.

Maryland's law enforcement is focused on various roads across different regions. In the Central Region, for example, troopers will be watching over Interstates 495 and 95, among others. The Western Region is not exempt from the effort, as patrols will be deployed along stretches prone to impaired driving incidents. When it comes to the Northern and Southern Regions, troopers will also be out in force, covering areas such as the JFK Memorial Highway to U.S. Route 50 and Interstate 97, keeping a vigilant eye on the roads.
