Save on back-to-school shopping, shoes, and more!
In many states across the nation, children have already returned to school for the 2022-2023 school year. Fortunately, most of the kids in Maryland have a few more weeks to enjoy the summer. Maryland families can start getting ready for the upcoming school year and save money by shopping during Maryland Tax-Free Week, August 14–20.
The annual event allows shoppers to purchase clothing and footwear tax-free on items priced at $100 or less. This sale is also designed to boost business for local retailers.
Maryland Tax-Free Week is valid on most types of clothing, shoes, and accessories—with the exception of handbags, luggage, jewelry, and select sports equipment. The one major exception is on backpacks, as taxes will be waived on any backpack priced at $40 or less to make sure kids have something to carry to school.
"August’s temperatures are sizzling, and so are the savings during Shop Maryland Tax-Free Week," Comptroller Franchot said. "Whether you’re looking to freshen up your wardrobe for the cooler months ahead or need to get your kids the latest styles for the new school year, this end-of-summer tradition is a great time to shop, save and support Maryland businesses."

Sales tax is currently 6% in Maryland, so if you spent $500 on apparel for your family it would save you $30 in taxes. The discount will be valid for online purchases as long as the items are shipped and received during Tax-Free Week. To see an entire list of exempt and non-exempt products, visit Marylandtaxes.gov.
Most of the counties in Maryland are slated to begin school on August 29. The county with the earliest start time is Frederick, on August 17. Carroll, Garrett, Harford, Wicomico, and Worcester counties don’t start until after Labor Day on September 6.
