Dikembe Mutombo, one of the NBA's best defensive players, has died following a battle with brain cancer. He was 58 years old.

Mutombo was undergoing treatment in Atlanta for a brain tumor. He died surrounded by his family.

"Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said. "On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others."

Mutombo played in the NBA for 18 seasons, playing for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rocks, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and New Jersey Jets. Standing at 7 feet and 2 inches, he was an eight-time All-Star, four-time defensive player of the year, and three-time All-NBA selection. He went into the Hall of Fame in 2015 after averaging 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

Following his retirement, he served on the boards of many organizations, including Special Olympics International, the CDC Foundation, and the National Board for the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.
