Jerry West, the man who inspired the NBA logo, has died. He was 86 years old.

The news was announced by the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday morning.

"Jerry West, the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 86," the team said. "His wife, Karen, was by his side."

West was a huge figure in the NBA for eight decades. He won nine championships as a player, scout, coach, executive, and consultant.
