(CNN) – Many mainstream economists say the cost of goods like cars, groceries, shoes and electronics could go up soon. The commerce secretary told Fox News the new tariffs are on track to begin around midnight Eastern time Monday. He says a 10% hike on Chinese imports is on the table, on top of last month’s increase. Executive orders also call for tariffs on most Canadian and all Mexican imported goods worth more than $800. The secretary said the percentages of those duties are unclear for now. U.S. companies are the ones that have to pay the tariffs. The Trump Administration downplays how much of that cost they would pass on to consumers. Another concern is that Mexico, China and Canada could impose retaliatory measures. But, some analysts say new tariffs could be good for the U.S. in the end if they open negotiations. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CBS Americans should not worry about inflation. He said his department will appoint an affordability czar.
