WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett said no charges will be filed in a deadly 2023 officer-involved shooting in Wichita.

Daniel Stowe, 50, was killed in the shooting on Dec. 3 in the 4200 block of E. Gilbert. Sedgwick County 911 received a domestic disturbance call that afternoon and arrived to find Stowe standing in the street.

The officer speaking to person who called 911 was told that Stowe had been making suicidal statements. This information was relayed to the officers who were talking with Stowe. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said at the time that as officers tried to pat down Stowe for weapons, he was not compliant with their requests.

The sheriff’s office said Stowe drew a handgun and was ordered to drop it, but instead he raised the gun and pointed it at one of the officers. Another officer fired on Stowe, hitting him in the right torso and killing him.

Bennett’s decision, released on Thursday, said that the shooting fell under the Kansas “stand your ground” law, and that the officer fired in self-defense. His ruling revealed that the officer whose shot struck Stowe fired her weapon four times.

Investigators later confirmed that Stowe had sent messages to his ex-wife indicating that he intended to force officers to shoot and kill him.
