ATLANTIC CITY — Danna Ramirez knew Saturday was her final high school wrestling match. She wanted to make it count. "I just had to let it all on the mat," the Ocean City senior said. Ramirez pinned Gabrielle Roberts of North Brunswick in the 138-pound fifth-place match Saturday at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Ramirez and Roberts were tied 3-3 in the second period, but the Ocean City standout got a takedown to go up 6-5. Roberts' reversal cut her deficit to 6-5. Ramirez then pinned her in 4 minutes, 37 seconds. "I just needed to do everything I could," Ramirez said. "It was my last year. I needed to do everything I could, and that's all thanks to (Ocean City assistant and girls coach Brian Mecouch) and (Orchard South Wrestling owner and coach Jimmy) Garrett.

"I had to power through out there." Ramirez is the second female state place-winner (top eight in each of the 12 weight classes) in school history. Olivia Guy, a 2024 graduate who wrestles at Ursinus College, placed eighth last season. "Danna definitely works hard," Mecouch said. "For her to finish her high school career off like this, it's great for her. "It has been a long season. It's not easy going through the battles of the season, so I am really happy for her. Hopefully this will encourage more girls to come out for the sport." This season, Ramirez (23-6) captured the Cape-Atlantic League title and placed second at the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame Girls Tournament. Ramirez also placed third at the Queen of the East Tournament and won the South Region title Feb. 23. She placed second in the South Region and sixth in the state tournament as a sophomore. "It's been awhile since my sophomore year, but it was my goal," she said. "I did it for me. To prove to myself I could do it." Ramirez lost a 12-8 decision in the first-round Thursday. She bounced back with a pin and a hard-fought 5-3 decision. She lost in the consolation semifinals Friday, but made up for it in a major way Saturday.
