A cold front coming to the region could bring freezing temperatures and possible snowflakes.

If you thought winter was over, Mother Nature has a little surprise up her sleeve. A polar vortex moving in early Wednesday will bring below-freezing temperatures and blustery wind to the Northeast. Look for temperatures to drop into the 20s and 30s in the overnights beginning on Wednesday in Virginia, Maryland, and D.C., with daytime temperatures in the mid-60s on Thursday and Friday. The big chance for snow comes late Friday and early Saturday when Arctic air blasts through the area.

The cold weather will roll in overnight on Wednesday, pushing temperatures into the 30s through most of the DMV region, with a chance of upper 20s in eastern Virginia and western Maryland. The National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for the Baltimore and D.C. region that runs from midnight tonight through 9 a.m. on Thursday. If you planted any flowers over the past couple of weeks you might want to cover them up and pull your winter jacket out for the morning commute. On Thursday, temps will gradually warm up with a projected high of 66 degrees.

On Friday expect more of the same with a low in the 30s and a daytime high of 58. Friday night is when things get interesting with rain, wind, and freezing temperatures that could set the stage for snow. The small window for wintery precip will happen after 9 p.m. and carry over into the early morning hours on Saturday. You’ll want to stay indoors the rest of the day as rain and wind with gusts up to 30 miles per hour linger in the area. The cold snap retreats a bit on Mother’s Day with morning lows edging into the 40s and warming to a pleasant 62 degrees.
