Scottsdale police were involved in a fatal incident last Friday that resulted in the death of a 42-year-old man and injuries to a K9 officer. The incident began when Joseph Santos was reported to have threatened someone with a gun near Scottsdale Road and Loop 202, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix .

Officers arrived at the scene and found that Santos had left. They located his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but he fled. Santos later returned and did not follow police commands, leading to the deployment of a K9 unit. According to Scottsdale Police, an officer fired after Santos moved toward an object in his vehicle, hitting both Santos and the K9. Santos died at the scene, and the K9 was treated at a veterinary clinic and released, as per ABC 15 .

Scottsdale Mayor Lisa Borowski stated, "Last night, there was an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the area of 400 North Scottsdale Road. Thankfully, our responding officers are safe. I pray for the recovery of our cherished K-9 unit, who sustained injuries. I thank the brave men and women who faithfully protect our community," as stated by FOX 10 Phoenix . The Mesa Police Department is leading the investigation as part of the East Valley Critical Incident Response Team, and authorities report no ongoing threat to the public.
