"Shut up!" The long-awaited return to Genovia is officially here! The Princess Diaries 3 is finally happening. (We only had to wait 20 years!)

Filmmaker Adele Lim, who wrote the scripts for Disney’s 2021 Raya and the Last Dragon and Crazy Rich Asians before making her directorial debut with last year’s Joy Ride, will direct the movie.

"As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life," she said in a statement to Deadline. "We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide."

Anne Hathaway shared the news of the third film on her Instagram:

Flora Greeson will write the script for the threequel, Debra Martin Chase will produce, and Naia Cucukov will executive produce the film alongside Melissa Stack. There's no word yet on whether Julie Andrews, Chris Pine, and others will also return. Only time will tell ...

Both The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) and the 2001 original movie were adapted from Meg Cabot's young adult novels. The late Gary Marshall directed the two films. They focused on Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who learns she is heir to the throne of a fictional European nation called Genovia and must undergo lessons from her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Andrews), and continue into Mia’s coronation in the sequel.

Princess Diaries 3 has been in development since 2022, and last year, Hathaway shared her enthusiasm about the movie’s progress in an interview with V Magazine.

"We're in a good place," Hathaway said at the time. "There's nothing to announce yet. But we're in a good place."

We'll keep you posted as we learn more about The Princess Diaries 3! So stay tuned. In the meantime, we're gonna go watch the first two films and cry because "miracles happen!"
