TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) — The University of Arizona is working to comply with new policies and procedures following an executive order signed in January by President Donald Trump. The order seeks to end what he describes as radical and wasteful government Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and preferences. As a result, universities nationwide, including the University of Arizona, are making adjustments, sparking tension and concern among faculty members. During a Faculty Senate meeting on Monday night, strong reactions emerged as the rollback of DEI initiatives was discussed. “Rent a fleet of U-Haul trailers and deliver a complete inventory of all of our published books and articles, our patents, copies of all of our works, and music scores. Deliver them with a shipping label that says, ‘Welcome to Diversity, The University of Arizona,’” Downing stated. The rollback of DEI programming has created a sense of urgency among some faculty members, who fear the impact these changes could have on the university’s academic environment. “It’s been an unsettling few weeks,” said Faculty Senate Chair Leila Hudson. “We’ve spent much of it working on emergency projects as we try to keep ourselves from being canceled in this brave new world we now inhabit.” News 4 Tucson followed up with Downing after the meeting to understand his perspective. “What they’re suggesting is that we take a definition that outsiders have of what they think DEI is and apply it internally to specific individuals and programs,” Downing explained. “We are taking a measured approach toward ensuring compliance with new policies and procedures that will impact higher education institutions in the coming weeks and months. As a public institution, we will continue to adhere to all applicable laws at the local, state, and federal levels. We will continue to uphold our university commitment to fostering a campus environment where everyone can thrive as we advance our academic, research, and service missions.” The university did not comment on Downing’s remarks. However, he remains strong in his stance, even stating that he would personally fund the U-Hauls if the university accepts his proposition.
