The Woodside High boys track and field team won the Class 5 state indoor championship Tuesday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. It was the program’s first state title.

The Wolverines did it by building an early lead on the first day as they scored 24½ points in the field events. Senior Deimon Collins and junior Xavier Canfield finished 1-2 in the triple jump. Collins won with a leap of 46 feet, 11½ inches, and Canfield was the runner-up at 46-7¼. Collins also was fourth in the high jump and fifth in the long jump. Canfield was seventh in both the high jump and long jump.

Junior Dontrae Walls Jr. continued the momentum Tuesday as he finished runner-up in both the 55-meter hurdles and 55-meter dash. The Wolverines also got help from senior Zephaniah Palacious, who was sixth in the 55 hurdles, and junior Darrell Boyd was sixth in the 55 meters.

Nansemond River was second and Bayside was third.

The Warriors scored 24 points in the jumping events, led by Israel Lewis, who won the high jump (6-6). Quincy Gilmer and Jasaani Becton finished third and fourth, respectively, in the long jump. Mason Mills was sixth in the triple jump.

The Marlins were led by senior Andrew Salvodon, who won the 500 meters (1:01.18) and 300 meters (33.76 seconds). He also teamed with Elijah Willoughby, Breon Hardnett and Halim Hardnett to win the 4×200 relay (1:28.38).

On the girls’ side, James River of Midlothian won the title, but Maury finished runner-up.

The Commodores were led by sprinters Zamonie Askew and Chaundra Cooper, who were second and third, respectively, in the 55 meters. Askew was third in the 300 meters. Cooper, Askew, Camille Vaughn and Carleah Lindsey won the 4×200 relay (1:41.67).

Maury also got help from Bria Byrd, who finished runner-up in the long jump while Cooper was third in that event.

Class 6



Grassfield’s girls finished third behind a pair of Northern Virginia teams: champion South County and Robinson.

The Grizzlies were led by sprinter Sophie Rambo, who won the 500 (1:12.35) and 300 (38.31). She also placed fourth in the 55 meters. They also got help from Kaitlyn Bullock, who won the shot put (47-2). Her throw was the best in the state this season and ninth nationally.

No Hampton Roads boys team finished in the top 10.

Class 4



Jamestown’s boys and Manor’s girls were runners-up.

The Eagles were led by Jeffrey Linton, who won the 1,000 (2:28.29); Jonathan Grimm, who was runner-up in both the 1,600 and 3,200; and Josiah Walston, the runner-up in the 500.

The Mustangs were led by Yowome Ayim, who was second in the 55 hurdles, third in the long jump and third in the triple jump. Savannah Hunter was second in the triple jump, and Triniti Desince was second in the 300. Ayim, Desince, Jazzyria Armstrong and Adriana Mapp won the 4×200 relay (1:43.50).

Class 3



Grafton’s boys won the Class 3 title.

The Clippers were led by Aaron Waddy, who won the 55 meters (6.47), was third in the 300, fourth in the high jump and sixth in the 500. Distance runners Connor Linehan and Keenai Whiting were second and third, respectively, in the 1,000. Whiting, Jude Yembu, Makale Barnett and Ezekiel Hurst teamed up to win the 4×400 relay (3:24.0).

Lafayette’s boys were third. The Rams were led by Tristan Harris, who set a meet record in the triple jump (48-4½) and was second in the long jump.

• Kecoughtan senior Kellen LaRoche finished second in the boys long jump, third in the triple jump and third in the high jump in Class 5.

• Hickory’s Tristan Fancher, Jonathan Baum, Tyler Trago and Zach Schubert won the boys 4×800 relay (7:56.81) in Class 5.

• Grassfield senior Samuel Blount won the shot put (59-4) in Class 6.

• Deep Creek sophomore Destini Gatling won the girls long jump (5-4) in Class 5.

• Warhill senior Erianna Mendieta won the girls pole vault (11 feet) in Class 4.

• Warhill senior Andrew Picataggi won the 300 (35.0) in Class 4.

• Nansemond River’s Audrina Chew, Mikyah Johnson, Jasmine Gaines and Kylaa Willis won the girls 4×400 (4:01.93) in Class 5.

• Warhill junior Sahmera Green won the girls high jump (5-4) in Class 4.

• Heritage’s Tyla Clarke, Ahnasti Brown, Giani Darden and Jaleia Beasley won the girls 4×200 relay in Class 3.
